Raymond Fiest is quickly becoming an author I really like.
I just read shadow of a dark queen and even though I thought of it as a fantasy version of the dirty dozen, I loved it.
I highly recommend his books to you, even though he has 5 stand alone series, you should start with magician.

I've been thinking about taking the Fiest plunge, this will tip me over the edge. Is Magician: Apprentice the first book in the riftwar saga?
Yes it is. A friend of mine bought an old-school edition that has apprentace and master as one book.
It has some of the best fantasy artwork I have ever seen.
