Dune

Last month I read the last of the Dune series. I found the writing style to be disjointed, the character development non-existent.

Complaining to a friend about my disappointment, he asked how I liked the rest of the Dune books. It was the only one I had read and he lent me a copy of the first book, written by Frank Herbert.

As I was finishing it this morning, I was amazed at how incredibly well written it was. I might be putting Frank Herbert into my favorite authors category if the rest of his books are as well written.

Amazing amazing book.

Also here are my favorite writers:
George R. R. Martin
Issac Asimov
Arther C. Clarke
God (of course)
Tim M. Lewis (if he would ever publish something)
C. S. Lewis (not sure of the relation to Tim)
Stephen R. Donaldson
Frederik G. Pohl

I was just telling Kori that I need to work on that novel so I can get it published, go on a book tour, sell the movie rights, and make loads of cash.

My dad loaned me a complete works of Arthur C. Clarke that I haven't even touched yet. I've got way too many in the queue in front of it.

Yeah, since I moved into my trailer I havn't watched any tv. My friends are unloading thier entire sci fi-fantasy collections onto me. I have a stack of at least 10 more books to read.

What I like about Clarke is the vision he had. He came up with the idea of communications satellites, and rightly predicted that the Europa was covered with a thin shelf of ice, with a deep ocean under.

Dune is a masterful work. The rest of the series pretty much sucks. I have a copy of Dune that I re-read every so often - it's just that good.

Yeah, Dune rocks.

Frank's Dune books are great. A lot of people aren't super crazy about the five books that follow Dune, but I like them just as much. As a matter of fact, God Emperor of Dune, despite its lack of "action", may very well be my favorite.

Don't even waste your time on the bastardization of Dune committed by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Their Dune books are bereft of ideas, lack any character development whatsoever and downright contradict what Frank wrote on so many occasions it's disgusting. Brian and KJS are laughing all the way to the bank, and mark my words that's the MAIN reason why they write them.

George R. R. Martin is my favorite writer too - I have a couple other authors that are enjoyable to read if you like him. I just read brandon sanderson's books (elantris, mistborn trilogy) and enjoyed them. Gene Wolf is excellent (book of the new sun is his masterpiece). robert jordan is dead but has a good series with the wheel of time (it is 13 books long with the last one being completed this year by brandon sanderson using jordans notes, outlines, etc.)

I had no idea Robert Jordan had died. I was a fan of the Wheel of Time, although I thought it was getting a little long. I will make sure to pick up the last two books I have missed.

I've read nearly everything by Asimov (including his non-fiction science books) as well as Clarke. Clarke was thinking so far ahead with his fantasy about what could be. Donaldson is good, but I grew tired after 3 of his books. Pohl was another master of sci-fi. There are a number of good sci-fi from long ago, but you have to look around in old dusty used book stores. Of course I have read them because I am old and dusty myself.
